Carnival of Fano

Fano , the city of Fortune, is cheerful, lively, sunny, rich in history and monuments . There is nothing better than discovering it during Carnival when, in the middle of winter, it becomes colored and warm along the streets of the historic center but, above all, along Viale Gramsci where for three Sundays the parade of allegorical floats takes place, which are the most representative elements of this ancient popular festival .

Legend has it, in fact, that the Carnival was born in Fano in the Middle Ages, on the occasion of the reconciliation of the two most important families of the city at the time: the Del Cassero and the Da Carignano. Subsequent testimonies from 1765, in addition to the bullfight with the pig, target shooting and races for the palios, already mention the Getto, one of the peculiar characteristics of the Carnival of Fano that over the centuries has transformed from the arrogant one of the confetti that the nobles threw mercilessly on the crowd, to the colorful, delicate and delicious throwing of chocolates and sweets that drag thousands of spectators onto the stands and stages.

One of the traditions of the Fano Carnival is, in fact, the Getto : it is the throwing, from the allegorical floats, of quintals of sweets and candies , to symbolize the joy of the party. Chocolates and various sweets are thrown towards the crowd, and about 10,000 people try to catch at least some. It is no coincidence that the motto of the party is precisely " The sweetest in Italy since 1347 ".

Over time, the floats have grown in size to become real papier-mâché giants, real travelling stages created by the ingenious imagination of the float masters.

Accompanying the parade of floats is a procession with various types of masks that interact with the public by dancing and performing.

The whole event is divided into three phases: first the parade of the floats presentation; in the second passage there is the eagerly awaited jet and in the third, when it is already evening, the floats parade illuminated by a thousand effects and lights.

But the most welcome guests of the Fano Carnival are the children . A very special section is dedicated to them: the Children's Carnival. At 10:00 every Sunday there will be dedicated masked parades, entertainment, music, fun, creative workshops. For the first time this year, children will be able to visit the majestic floats with the float drivers who will be their guides.
